"The waterborne American Coot is one good reminder that not everything that floats is a duck."
The American Coot is a winter guest here in the mountains of North Carolina. Lake Junaluska is home to these snow birds that hang with it's feather friends, the duck. They do not have web feet, but long legs, and long toes that help kick through the water. The American coot can be found plucking plants while walking, swimming, dabbling it's head under water.
Did you know the oldest known American Coot lived to be at least 22 years 4 months old.
