Description
In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the east end is the Cataloochee valley. At one time the mountains of the Southern Appalachia were home to elk, but were eliminated by over hunting and loss of habitat. In 2001 twenty-five elk were reintroduced to the area. In the Catalooch valley after the 2011 calving season an their estimation of elk to be just over 130. You can now see elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitor center in Cherokee.
I call him Big Boy, but his tag number says 67. Watching him for over four years now and each time he amazes me. I hope he does the same for you!
I have known #67 for years and the first elk I truly loved. I have been in search of him since last year after the rut. Monday he was euthanized due to skin lesions and necrosis. My heart is is heavy right now, but I will one day see you again my friend!
Rest in Peace and run Big Boy
