Cades Cove Grist Mill In Winter Painting
The past couple days of ridge weather ices up the flume, and wheel. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park's old Cable Grist Mill in Cades Cove. Go in, walk around, speak with the miller, and buy whole wheat flour, and corn meal ground on site! In 1934 the Great Smoky Mountain National Park was established.
Cades Cove, as part of it, is located in Tennessee at the western end of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park on Laurel Creek Road. This special place, at the turn of the century, was home to more than 125 families.
The grist mill in Cades Cove was built by John P. Cable in 1868. He also built and operated a sawmill around the same time utilizing the same wheel for both mills. John was a farmer as well, and when he was out tending his fields customers would ring a large bell that was mounted on a pole.
