Description
In the Great Smoky Mountain National Park at the east end is the Cataloochee Valley where the state reintroduced elk to North Carolina. At one time, the mountains of Southern Appalachia were home to elk but were eliminated by overhunting and loss of habitat. In 2001 twenty-five elk were reintroduced to the area. In the Cataloochee Valley after the 2011 calving season their estimation of elk was just over 130. You can now see elk in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park visitor center in Cherokee.
