Description
In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the east end is the Cataloochee valley. At one time the mountains of the Southern Appalachia were home to elk, but were eliminated by over hunting and loss of habitat. In 2001 twenty-five elk were reintroduced to the area. In the Cataloochee valley after the 2011 calving season an their estimation of elk to be just over 130. You can now see elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitor center in Cherokee.
The young spike elks hang out watching a learning from the big bull elks. This young male elk is just hang out, eating grass, and waiting his turn if he is lucky.
