Description
Eastern Swallowtail and The Peanut Butter Tree
Lake Lure North Carolina's Flowering Bridge has a group of Peanut Butter trees near the entrance of the bridge. It is said when the leaves are bruised they give off an odor of peanut butter, hence its nickname. The flowers are white appearing in late summer and early fall. The flowers are fragrant; showy red calyxes cover small, and ultimately, bright blue fruit. The tree attracts an abundance of eastern swallowtail and pipevine butterflies flock to this tree.
