Description
Mingus (grist) Mill located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was built in 1886, and rehabilitated in 1968 by the National Parks service. The mill is operated from mid-March through November by a volunteer or "miller" who will talk with you giving the history of the mill, as well as making cornmeal and wheat flour.
The Mingus family had moved into the Oconaluftee Valley in the 1790s. Mingus family had the mill built in three months time ,and paid $600 to millwright contractor Sion Thomas Early to complete the task in 1886. In its hay day the mill was surrounded by cleared fields and crops and served the small community that was located near the mill.
