Description
A female elk called a cow enjoying blackberries in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can watch at a safe distance early in morning and later afternoon at the Oconaluftee visitors center off 441 in Cherokee North Carolina.
In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the east end is the Cataloochee Valley. At one time the mountains of the Southern Appalachia were home to elk but were eliminated by overhunting and loss of habitat. In 2001 twenty-five elk were reintroduced to the area. You can now see elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitor center in Cherokee, North Carolina.
