Description
Inside The Cathedral Of St. John The Baptist
The heat index was 117, and people were entering the church not only for its stunning interior beauty but to sit and contemplate their own faith.
When Savannah colonial charter began the English Trustees feared the Catholics. They believed since England and Spain were at war the Catholic were prohibited from setting in Savannah. That changed after the Revolutionary War, and Catholics were allowed to settle and build the Cathedral Of St. John The Baptist. "Bishop John England of the Diocese of Charleston, which encompassed Savannah, consecrated the new church April 1, 1839. Pope Pius IX established the Diocese of Savannah in July 1850 and the congregation began to plan for a new cathedral in 1870 under Savannah's fourth Bishop." The construction began of the cathedral in 1873 and completed in 1896. The church shortly after completion was almost destroyed by fire was faithfully rebuilt by 1899.
