"Tate House, also known as The Cedars, is a historic home located at Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina. The core was built about 1850 and is a two-story, three bay, a brick mansion with a center hall plan in the Greek Revival style. It was remodeled in the Second Empire style in 1868, with the addition of a mansard roof and large three-story octagonal tower. It was the home of Samuel McDowell Tate (1830–1897), who undertook the 1868 remodeling."
Samuel McDowell Tate was a merchant, a soldier, a railroad official, and a legislator. He was born in Morganton, North Carolina. Samuel heritage Scottish and Irish. Samuel attended private schools in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, after the death of his father. After finishing his educations Samuel lived in Philadelphia as a merchant.
In 1850 Samuel went back to Burke County, North Carolina setting up a business selling general merchandise.
In 1861, Tate enlisted in the Confederate army and was appointed a captain of Company D, Sixth North Carolina Regiment. May 1862, he was advanced to lieutenant colonel on 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg. There he assumed command of the Sixth North Carolina Regiment and led his troops up Cemetery Hill and in the battle on Seminary Ridge. He continued until the end of the civil war. During his time as commander Tate was wounded three times. On March 25, 1865, severely wound he was sent home to Morganton to recover from his injuries
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
