Description
These two elk calves hanging out and playing together. Earlier they were running around with not a care in the world. The Great Smoky National Park tries to collar all newborns within the park boundaries as soon as possible to keep count of the herd.
In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the east end is the Cataloochee valley. At one time the mountains of the Southern Appalachia were home to elk, but were eliminated by over hunting and loss of habitat. In 2001 twenty-five elk were reintroduced to the area. In the Cataloochee valley after the 2011 calving season an their estimation of elk to be just over 130. You can now see elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitor center in Cherokee.
October 2016 First bull elk has been spotted as far south at South Carolina since the 1700's. Hopefully he will come back to North Carolina and pick up some ladies!
