Artist's Description
As the rut is on in the mountains of North Carolina, Cataloochee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the best place to see elk in their native habitat roaming free. Here a bull elk is looking out over his harem making sure a rival does not steal his cows.
n the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the east end is the Cataloochee valley. At one time the mountains of the Southern Appalachia were home to elk, but were eliminated by over hunting and loss of habitat. In 2001 twenty-five elk were reintroduced to the area. In the Catalooch valley after the 2011 calving season an their estimation of elk to be just over 130. You can now see elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitor center in Cherokee.
