Description
A female elk here or cow is nursing her calf in a meadow of tall grass and ironweed. Elk are the largest species in the deer world and one of the largest land mammals in North America.
A cow has only one offspring after a gestation period is 240 to 262 days. She will isolate herself from the herd closer to her due date and will remain that way until calf is old enough to escape predictors, bears, and coyotes in the Mountains of Western North Carolina. The calf is fully weaned by two months of age and eating on their own, and the young elk will stay with it's mother until next offspring are born!
