Description
In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the east end is the Cataloochee valley. At one time the mountains of the Southern Appalachia were home to elk, but were eliminated by over hunting and loss of habitat. In 2001 twenty-five elk were reintroduced to the area. In the Catalooch valley after the 2011 calving season an their estimation of elk to be just over 130. You can now see elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitor center in Cherokee.
I call him Big Boy, but his tag number says 67. Watching him for over five years now and each time he amazes me. Here he is answering another huge bull who has some of his harem.
